Microdata Access Workshop

November 18, 2009

1800 M Street, NW

Washington, DC

Sponsored by the USDA Economic Research Service

The current administration's focus on evidence-based policy is based on the recognition that the nation needs to make wiser investments.  Thus, designing new initiatives that focus on data collection and analysis are at the core of this mission.

The NORC Data Enclave was established to respond to these needs.  In the three years since it began offering services, it has provided access to confidential microdata in a secure, remote access, environment.  It has also evolved into a collaborative environment which is intended to promote communication between data users and data producers and create a deeper knowledge infrastructure than would be the case in an isolated research setting.

The goals of this workshop are twofold: (1) to highlight the value of this form of microdata access and (2) to develop new directions for the enclave.  It will thus both feature the research achievements and collaborations that have occurred in its three-year history, and provide an opportunity for data users, producers, and others among the research community to provide suggestions about new approaches.
